Why are we friends if you won’t help me achieve my goals?
Misery loves company.
You want to say you knew me when, but not help me get there.
Why not try to ride the waves to the top with friends you think will be successful?
You are as successful as the people you surround yourself with.
People will gladly help someone when they think the person is beneath them in some way = not true altruism.
But they don’t want to help someone they see as a threat – someone who could easily become more successful than them.
This sucks. This accurately describes most people. They aren’t bad people. They won’t go out of their way to harm you. But they won’t even help you when they claim to be your friend and it won’t cost them anything but time.
It’s lonely at the top.
Why do you think people who are at the top of their respective games hang with people at the top of other games? Those people aren’t jealous, trying to take from them or trying to diminish their accomplishments.
It’s pretty fucked up honestly. You find who real friends are.
Like everyone from my General Assembly class, except Adam. One guy, Arsames, who was with me in class every day cutting up, even went out of his way to tell me why none of my ventures would succeed. And not offer anything positive. He’s got a $5k/month apt that his mom pays for though, so he’s fine. He just wants to make sure the guy who was worst in the class at coding doesn’t become more successful than him. But that’s easy to do when you dick off because you were born royalty in some other country.
Some people won’t even tolerate you having more attention than them. Like Cauri Jaye. He’s so arrogant. Calls himself a “futurist” but nobody knows what the fuck he does all day. He’s probably “thinking about stuff.” He canned me from working the front desk – greeting people and answering the phones – because I made too many jokes. I’m not kidding.
And then said good luck. He and his two co-founders of rhubarb studios (a colossal failure and a ripoff of the biz who fell for that sucker punch) told me they’d be happy to help me: right recommendations for me, introduce me to people – didn’t happen.
There are soooo many people out there who are going to tell you they support you, but when push comes to shove, they balk.
Get ready. If you work hard and long enough, this will happen to you. And we can chat about it. Because I’ll always be real with you. That’s my MO.
